Today, I'm continuing to work through chapters in Luke Welling's book on PHP and MySQL, focusing on interacting with the MySQL database, through the CLI ( the MySQL monitor) and the web (connecting to the backend through the client).
After this, I plan to start learning how to develop web applications with WordPress. One of the reasons why is that I would like to iterate through several personal "practice" applications and, by far, my greatest weakness is UI/UX design. I would like Wordpress to handle this for me. And I'm sticking with PHP for these applications because it doesn't require much upfront investment in the form of designing OO class architectures before I can code and it's not as much of a mindf*** as node.js. I don't see a lot of local demand for Python. As far as scripting languages go, I think that would leave Ruby as my other option and I don't have a strong desire to learn Ruby right now when PHP can do the same thing.
In the future, after coding up several small practice applications, I would like to start dabbling in iOS mobile app development or C#, .NET development for the purpose of learning ASP.NET web development and Xamarin cross-platform mobile development.
So, that's where I am right now.
This is my 4th month of unemployment and, yeah, I need to get moving on something! Panic tends to hit all at once because I leave things until the last minute.
I would like to work at a small development studio, not a corporate environment again. Like, more of a casual studio with a small team, working on several different projects from clients. I would like another Jr. Developer role and work on both front-end and back-end projects.
I'm not sure about working at a design agency. That's not really what I'm thinking of. What am I thinking of? I would like for the idea to become clearer.
